From more than two decades, the concept of "smart city" (also called "intelligent city" or "digital city") has become more and more popular in scientific literature. Smart Cities (SCs) commonly refer to urban spaces that make use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to enhance the quality and performance of urban services such as energy, transportation, critical infrastructures, and other urban utilities in order to reduce resource energy consumption, wastage, CO2 emissions and overall costs. SCs aim to improve urban management performance by using massive data to provide better services to citizens, to monitor and optimize existing infrastructures, and to encourage innovative business models in both private and public sectors.

The SC field has made very important progress in recent years. However, the challenges are so many and diverse that they still require extensive research and validation before SC can become a standard way of conceiving urban development. For example, the monitoring of urban spaces (e.g., for maintenance purposes) in SCs is complex and time-consuming since this space is currently surrounded by (or it is embedded with) smart Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems for capturing and processing huge amounts of data. Additionally, these tasks can also receive data from citizens' smartphones under a crowd-sourcing philosophy. SCs are supported by extensive digital infrastructure of (signal and imaging) sensors, real-time data, databases, and intelligent applications (i.e. software embedded in the various components forming the intelligent urban ecosystem).

Topics of Interest

In this special session, we are particularly interested in applications which relate the use of signal and image processing approaches to smart cities' applications, services and infrastructures. Examples of topics of interest for this Special Session (but not limited to these) are:

Submission Guidelines

In order to submit to this special session, please access this link. This special session acccept submission of full papers, which template can be found in the Main Track. Papers must have minimum of 4 (four) and maximum of 6 (six) pages, including figures and references, of novel research material. Papers must be submitted electronically using the Easy Chair System. Each paper will be single-blind reviewed by at least two independent reviewers and evaluated with particular attention to its originality, significance, and clarity. Papers will be published by IEEE, joined to IWSSIP proceedings, as a special session.

Registration Policy

One full registration must accompany each accepted paper. Each full registration covers a maximum of 2 (two) papers, but a special discount can be applied for more papers (please contact iwssip2020@ic.uff.br).

Failure to register before the deadline will result in a withdrawal of the paper from the conference program and proceedings. Any paper included in the conference program, but not presented at the conference according to the published schedule, will not appear in the official proceedings.

No-Show Policy

No-show papers are defined as papers submitted by authors who subsequently did not present the paper using a pre-recorded video or via live video streaming during the conference. No-show papers that were not withdrawn and were published in the Proceedings must be identified as "No-Show" in the files submitted to IEEE for further publication (IEEE Xplore). No-shows will not be available on IEEE Xplore or other public access IEEE forums. IEEE will maintain an archive of no-shows.
